Reflections

WHAT DOES HEALTHY
SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL
DEVELOPMENT MEAN TO YOU?

We asked parents and caregivers from across British Columbia to reflect on the many joys and struggles involved with raising children in the early years. To provide further support, we consulted with doctors, public health nurses, and early years specialists for their input; creating a series of e-learning modules to help you navigate the highs and lows of social and emotional development in the early years.

chapter 1:

the inner world of the parent

In this chapter, caregivers and child health experts reflect on the value of simply being present in a child’s life, as well as the importance of self care and the calming effect that routines may have on both child and caregiver

chapter 2:

THE CAREGIVER-CHILD RELATIONSHIP

In this chapter, we explore different ways that caregivers grow emotional attachment and trust including the role of gentle touch, verbal and non-verbal communication, and various strategies for co-regulating stress

chapter 3:

THE INNER WORLD OF THE CHILD

In this chapter, we delve into the inner world of young children, as observed by their caregivers and child health experts. This includes concepts around supporting who they are becoming, discussing feelings, and the important role of play.

chapter 4:

THE CHILD IN THE WORLD

In this chapter, larger strategies around encouraging kindness in small children, talking about gender, and celebrating differences at an early age are reflected on by both caregivers and child health experts with lived experiences.
